Local SEO vs AI Search in 2026: What's Different and Why You Need Both

Chris · 23 Jul 2026 · 7 min read

Local SEO and AI search share most of their raw ingredients — your Google Business Profile, your reviews, how consistent your details are across the web — but they're scored differently, by different systems, and you can genuinely win one while losing the other completely.

Where they overlap

Almost entirely at the foundation level:

  • A complete, accurate Google Business Profile
  • Strong, recent reviews with a healthy response rate
  • Name, address and phone number matching everywhere you're listed
  • Correct categories and a specific, well-described service list

Get these right and you've built the foundation for both. This is why fixing one genuinely does help the other — it's not two separate jobs from scratch.

Where they split

Local SEO — meaning Google's Local Pack, the map and three listings under most "near me" searches — leans heavily on proximity and Google-specific signals. It shows up on roughly 36% of local searches, and the bar to appear is comparatively low: be nearby, be decent, be listed correctly.

AI search — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's own AI Overviews and Gemini — cares less about where you are and more about how citable your information is across the entire web, not just inside Google. AI Overviews alone now appear on roughly 48% of all Google searches, a rise of around 58% year on year, meaning even searches that start on Google increasingly get intercepted by an AI-written summary before a customer ever reaches the traditional blue links.

Why you need both, not just one

The Local Pack still drives more raw volume — more people see it, more often. But when a customer gets a direct AI answer, they've typically skipped the comparison step entirely; the assistant has done the shortlisting for them, and they arrive closer to a decision already made in your favour.

Winning the Local Pack gets you into the running. Winning the AI answer gets you the booking before the customer even looks at anyone else.

Chase only one and you're leaving a real channel of customers with nobody watching it.

The bottom line

The two systems are close cousins, not the same thing. Build the shared foundation properly, then treat the AI-specific signals — freshness, specificity, cross-site consistency — as the extra layer on top, not an afterthought.
