Google Business Profile in the AI Era: Your 2026 Checklist

Your Google Business Profile now does more work than it used to. GBP-related signals account for roughly 32% of what decides your position in Google's Local Pack — the single largest slice of any ranking factor — and the exact same profile data feeds Google's AI Overviews and Gemini when they answer local questions. One listing, several audiences, all reading it at once.

Why one profile now does so much

It used to be simple: fill in a GBP listing, show up on Google Maps, done. Now that same profile is a source AI systems pull from directly — your categories, services, hours, photos and review text all become raw material for how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's own AI describe your business when someone asks.

If the profile is thin or stale, every one of those systems is working from bad information, and they'll quietly recommend someone else instead of guessing.

The checklist

  1. Categories — one primary category that's an exact match for what you do, plus every relevant secondary category. Wrong or missing categories mean you're invisible for entire types of work, and you'll never know those searches existed.
  2. Services list — specific, not generic. "Boiler repair, emergency callouts, bathroom installs" beats "plumbing services" every time — it's what lets AI match you to the actual question being asked.
  3. Hours — accurate, including holiday hours. "Open now" appears in a huge share of urgent searches; get this wrong and you get a customer at a locked door and a 1-star review to match.
  4. Photos — added at least monthly, real photos of real work, not stock images. Recency here reads as "still trading."
  5. Posts — weekly if you can manage it. Every post is fresh, specific content that AI systems can read — treat it as free advertising space, because that's what it is.
  6. Q&A section — seed it yourself with the 4-5 questions you actually get asked, answered clearly. Don't leave it for strangers to fill in badly.
  7. Business description — plain language covering what you do, where, and for whom. Skip the marketing speak.
  8. Attributes — wheelchair accessible, appointment required, women-led, and so on — tick whatever's genuinely true. These are extra matching signals, free of charge.

The bit almost everyone skips: replying to reviews

Businesses that respond to 80% or more of their reviews see a measurable ranking boost. Not just the nice ones — especially the difficult ones. AI systems and human customers both judge you more on how you handle a bad review than on how many good ones you have.

Read more on exactly why that matters in our guide to Google reviews and AI visibility.

The bottom line

Treat your GBP like the front page of your business, not a form you filled in once. Every section left blank or out of date is a small reason for AI to pick someone else.
